today his substitutions didn't make sense except for the fletcher one. it was disappointing how slow we were in the buildup play in the first half, when Carrick went to the middle we were better. Young was our best player today and changing him to the right flank made it harder for us to win the game, di maria wasn't match fit and mata was poor really contributed nothing and how he stayed and played the whole game is beyond me. I really hope that Rafael plays next week and he reverts to a back four and Herrera comes back as well because the speed of our play was lacking and it was as Jamie said frustrating, not the worst result in the world but it could have been better.

Our winning streak was always going to come to an end, but really this should have gone better. Slack defending from Evans yet again to let Benteke in. Good to see Falcao notch a goal, but overall our attack wasn't penetrating enough.... we kept on knocking it about the middle of the park in the First half without really creating many chances. Hope we can get all three points against the Magpies.

Do u guys feel the answer for the team is as simple as plating the diamond because lvg was playing the 4-1-4-1 formation before the injuries to Shaw and Rafael and I felt we did not attack very well but we had good defensive organisation and cover. Do u guys feel if we play the diamond next week with Carrick Herrera, Rooney and Di Maria will it not be as lightweight as when Blind was playing and won't the players leave Carrick isolated like they did when Blind was playing?

At the minute Charlie I think we are overly complicating things. I'd like to see us forget about fancy formations at the minute and get back to basics. For the next few games I'd like to see a 4-3-3 being used. Rafael is fit again, Evans and Jones as CBs and if Rojo is fit as LB. Carrick and Herrera sitting in the middle with Di Maria orchestrating play. Ahead of them Mata, Rooney and RVP/Falcao. I'm tired of seeing Rooney drop back into CM. Yesterday he played some good balls out to the wings but offered absolutely nothing through the middle where we should be at our most dangerous. Mata had a terrible game yesterday basically because he didn't have anyone to link up with. With Di Maria and Herrera in the side creating chances wouldn't be a problem. We should be playing to our strengths, not trying to cover up our weaknesses. Playing Fletcher for me showed that VG doesn't mind playing ugly. All well and good if we don't have any other options but even with our injuries we still have plenty.

I felt we did not attack very well but we had good defensive organisation and cover I felt the opposite, I thought we were scoring for fun and leaking goals

Louis van Gaal slams Manchester United following potentially "title-costing" draw with Aston Villa“I saw the first of City against Crystal Palace, it was a struggle until half time but they won 3-0 and that is the difference. "Maybe this game can cost you the title. “You have to win these type of matches but there is still a long way to go and Chelsea have to go to Stoke which won’t be easy.” www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/louis-van-gaal-slams-manchester-4847040

when I said we didn't attack well I meant with the 4141 when lvg was playing di maria wide with januzaj in the side as well. I don't think we attacked very well in the matches we played that formation and we weren't utilising the players we have

Hammy I agree with what you are saying but instead of mata don't you think Januzaj would have a better chance with a 433 rather than mata? or is it because januzaj's link up plat is poor or not as good as mata's. I just feel Juan mata drifts in and out of games for my liking and he is pushed off the ball easily and has no pace. I hope VG can employ a formation that will suit our players and also doesn't expose the players defensively.

Mata would be useless in a 4-3-3, he'd need to provide some width, something which I don't think he has enough pace to do effectively. I'm getting more and more frustrated with Mata, he's full of nice touches and getting on the end of chances in the box but he is as guilty as anyone for the slow attacking play, I also think he seems incredibly weak this season, bullied off the ball so easily.
I'd like us to go back to the 4-1-2-1-2.. The game vs Leicester should be wiped from everyone's memory, we played some blistering stuff in the first half and if it wasn't for a poor ref decision giving them a new incentive in the second we'd have won the game. That being said we still capitulated far too easily but I don't think that was down to the formation, it was just down to the mindset of the players at that time.
Just think we're far stronger mentally now, get Shaw and Rafa back at full back, Carrick playing the holding role anyone and Di Maria in the centre with Rooney behind RVP and Falcao. That's the way I'd be going anyway.

It's not like the 3-5-2 has made us any more secure defensively, it's all the same whatever formation we play. We're relatively solid as a unit but there are far too many individual errors being made, that was the case when we were playing 4 at the back and that's still the case playing 3/5 at the back. We're still giving away too many chances, just getting a bit more fortunate of late.

Januzaj could be an option. He's more of an individual player so depending on the game he could be used. I think Mata has suffered more than most under VG. At the start of the season he didn't get a look in, which I'm sure affected his confidence. When he has played some of our formations just don't suit his play. He's running all over the pitch trying to make things happen but trying to do too much means he can't concentrate on his own game. It's no coincidence when he played at Chelski he was the player with most assists in the league and he scored his fair share as well. Other than his formations and strange substitutions what I don't like most about VG is playing players in positions where they're not as effective. Rooney is an example. He's one of the deadliest strikers in the game but VG has him playing as CM a lot of the time where he's a little better than average. Di Maria is another. He's a lot more effective playing deeper but VG has him out on the wing or too far forward to influence p!ay. I'm positive if we played with Mata, Di Maria and Herrera, Mata would become the player we all know he is. These are our 3 most creative players in the squad but instead VG seems to prefer dull, ugly games where we don't concede too much instead of playing our creative players and ripping teams apart by sheer speed. Hopefully he will learn in the not too distant future the type of football Manchester United is associated with because it's a long way from this crap we are witnessing at the minute.

Jamie you are right the diamond showed how good we can be as an attacking force, the link up play between the players was brilliant and Herrera and di maria were good mixing quick one-two passing and pace to run at defenders. I think we can't utilise mata as much as he was at Chelsea because we don't have runners in the team for him to play in or link up with. di maria is the only one but he isn't a winger like hazard. I agree with both u guys on tour views I hope we see di maria playing were he was playing in the diamond or the position he used to play at Madrid and we will get the best our of him.

I just think Mata is too much of a luxury player, Mourinho had similar views as well. As I say he's alright at prowling around the penalty area looking to make the through ball or arriving in the area like Scholes used to do without anyone to pick him up slotting away the chances but he offers very little deeper on the pitch. He is most certainly not a central midfielder. If he is to play he plays behind the strikers but that means 1 of Rooney, Falcao and RVP miss out and I know for sure I'd rather have all 3 of those in my starting lineup than Mata.

Fair points Jaime. I just think we haven't seen the best of Mata. As a number 10 I wouldn't have any problems. I personally think he's a better number 10 than Rooney. Maybe if we played a diamond/4-1-2-1-2 with Carrick as the 1, Herrera and Di Maria as the 2 and Mata as the other 1 with Rooney and RVP/ Falcao up top we would have a pretty balanced team with a shit load of goals from us. Rooney up top will guarantee us 20/30 goals a season. Same as RVP. Add to the fact I'd expect at least 10 each from Mata and Di Maria I feel we don't need 3 top class strikers but are more in need of creative players. Of course it's horses for courses. There will be games were we can afford to play the 3 of them but watching us lately it looks like VG has chosen to play a more measured, possession game plan where for me someone like Mata would serve us better than !ets say Falcao.
