Herrera being left out is the big mystery for me, because his introduction would solve a lot of the issues we're seeing. I wish we could have some way to understand his omission. I disagree when people say our defence is shit. Sure we're still bound to make mistake because our defenders are still very young, but from what I see it's in midfield that the issue truly is. There is a lack of connection and mobility in tat CAM position behind our strikers, so much so that we are unable to take advantage of our possession spell. I believe the roots have been built up pretty well by LVG in terms of tactical awareness and possession (although there is still plenty f work to do), but now the times has come to move forward attacking wise or we won't be able to break the best teams. I wish we could add some bodies behind our strikers closer to each other to penetrate from the middle, especially when you have players like Di Maria, Rooney or Herrera (and even Mata) who can play quick passes/one-touch football and offer great mobility. All in all, I think that LVG is trying to implement a tactical and "philosophical" change, and I respect that because we're improving on many levels, but at the same time a part of me doesn't understand many of his decisions, such as the basic tactical set up, with Di Maria upfront, Rooney so deep, Herrera left out completely... There's no leader at the back Matt, it's the same mistakes game after game from Smalling, Jones, Evans simple tasks that they cannot seem to handle. You cannot have that at any club let alone a top club vying for a champions league spot, how many times has De Gea saved us due to their incompetence. Jones is still young but Smalling and Evans are experienced enough and should know better by now, the injuries are a big issue as well. I agree about the midfield but again he persists with the same personnel, try Herrera in there or Di Maria instead of Mata who has been poor for the last few games, get Rooney upfront. As for the game against Spurs, most of our chances came from Young's delivery who is the only one doing the job of a wing back without him we've been toothless. Not good enough.

I am not saying our defence is perfect, but I think many critics have too quickly put the blame on our defenders. While I partly agree, I still believe our biggest concern is not in defence, but in midfield and the way we set up tactically (but on that we all agree I think), resulting of poor link up play in the final third, and way too little threat upfront with the quality of the players we have. To be fair, I think we need two new faces in our defence, a RB (and Clyne would definitely be my pick over Coleman) and a CB whose injury record is impeccable to partner Rojo as first choice. But in my books, Jones and Smalling have a role to play, and I wouldn't rule them out too soon because they're not doing such a bad job. Evans on the other hand should be sold to make space, and I would offer Blackett a contract ASAP. However, as I said, my prime investment would be in CM: first, play Herrera because we're desperatly missing a mobile player to make combination and through balls in the final third. Then, get an enforcer, a solid and aggressive box-to-box midfielder. That's a profile we're lacking and that shows particularly when we play more aggressive teams. Such a profile would take some pressure off our backline and offer a much needed resistance in tight, physical games. I am still dreaming of a 3-man midfield of Carrick(or Blind), Herrera and a strong, athletic box-to-box. I think it would improve the balance of the team and of our CM (compared to Carrick/Rooney/Mata), releasing Rooney of his defensive roles and allow him to play that free role upfront where he excels. De Gea Clyne CB Rojo Shaw Blind Herrera CM Di Maria Rooney Falcao

LVG is clever, never admits his mistakes. Just going to have to ride it out this season and see what he has planned for the future. The 352 I can understand but it is playing it a bit safe and look where that got Moyes but a simple switch of Rooney and Di Maria would be much more beneficial.
I'd like to see something like that as well Matt, for some reason though Van Gaal doesn't fancy Herrera, which is a shame. I think he wants the perfect players but that's never going to happen, they all have their downfalls even his no.1 Strootman who will probably join in the summer. With all the quality we have and money spent it's frustrating to see it isn't being utilised, he should work with the players he's got rather than shoehorning into his system. There's no doubt we have improved but it's still very much stop start.

falcao was shite, if he wants to play more often he needs to show he acn do better then that. as for herrera, i really don't know, he should be playing to be honest, but fellaini hasn't exactly been bad also

3 at the back doesn't work, ffs again today? How long before LVG realises this? The english game is based around four defenders, every other team play 36 matches against 4 defenders and train accordingly except when they play us,...it's like we are down to 10 men every time we need to defend.

What he says about the diamond is fair but which team never has chances created against them though? I mean the diamond formation we can outscore most teams with it and play attractive football plus the team is a lot more comfortable with it. I don't think he sees that even with his safe formation the other teams get a chance because of our defensive mistakes and when they have good movement up front and good players out wide. It was bad to watch the first half. He needs to realise that as much as di maria and robben have pace they aren't the same type of players to be honest and the other thing is that di maria is not even good at finishing compared to robben.

The only difference between Moyes and Van Gaal ( at Manchester United) is VG at least sounds like he knows what he's doing but on the pitch it's the same old story. Neither of them are/were flexible enough to have a plan B. Yesterday VG said that his risks paid off. What a load of bollocks. He was forced to change formation due to Evans being injured and straight away we looked more dangerous in our attack. We still looked shakey at the back but that's been the story of our season. You cannot play without a CM in the PL which is what we're effectively doing with a 3-5-2. We have Carrick playing too deep and Rooney playing too far forward for us to have any influence in the middle. VG also said he plays Di Maria as a forward because of his pace, once again, what a load of bollocks. Di Maria is an average striker and an average winger. Paying £60+m for average is a ridiculous decision when we all know just by changing Rooneys position with Di Marias we would be a lot stronger. Yesterday by bringing on Fellaini instead of Herrera for me shows VG is anti football. If we play a 3-5-2 against Cambridge then I really will question Van Gaals position at Manchester United.

I don't think there's any doubt that we'll play 352 at Cambridge.

LVG is just too stubborn to change his stupid formation. When it works, he will tell the world I told you so ! ... I doubt it will happen though.
