MICHAEL CARRICK TO EXTEND CONTRACT
Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick has agreed terms to extend his contract for a further year to June 2017.
Carrick, 34, signed for United in July 2006. During his time at the club, he has won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, one League Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup, and a UEFA Champions League.
Michael Carrick said:
"This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing. It’s great to have the opportunity to work under José Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career. I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future."
José Mourinho said:
"Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game. I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever. Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him."

CARRICK TO HAVE OLD TRAFFORD TESTIMONIAL
Michael Carrick has been awarded a 2017 testimonial by Manchester United to mark his 11 years with the club. At the request of the United vice-captain, all monies raised after expenses will be distributed to his chosen charities through the newly-created Michael Carrick Foundation, itself a registered charity. The major highlight of the testimonial will be a match between a Manchester United 2008 XI and Michael Carrick All-Stars to be played at Old Trafford on Sunday 4 June 2017. The confirmed list of players for the United team includes Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs, while the All-Stars line-up will feature Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Michael Owen. Carrick, 35, signed for United in July 2006. During his time at the club he has won five Premier League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, a FIFA Club World Cup, a UEFA Champions League, six FA Community Shields and, of course, the recently-secured UEFA Europa League trophy which will be paraded to the fans at Michael’s upcoming Old Trafford testimonial match on 4 June.

To me an absolutely correct decision, there were no other real contenders in terms of personality and time at the club.
We will have proper 2nd and 3rd captains in case he is rested, see no problem there.
Captaincy means leading on and off the field and he will do it properly, great example for all around.

Carrick, 36, has not played since experiencing an irregular heart rhythm in September, but he began training again in November following treatment. "The club would be very happy for him to do that. I would be very happy also for him to do that," Mourinho said. "I expect him to join," he added. "[He had] a few months without even training so now he is in his second week of training with the team. He is a very important player for us. "I think it is a good decision for the team and a good decision for him to finish playing football and not injured or with some problem."
