Rooney is more physical which is fine in Van Gaal's mind but Herrera could easily replace Mata and he's better defensively, the downside is he does give the ball away a fair bit but that's cause he takes more risks with his passing. He can't even get a start today though so must be more to it, crap in training.. Fuck knows. I think this plays a huge part of him to not to play Herrera, he seems a too cautious manager from what we've been seeing this season. But if we want to see some better final third football van Gaal needs to allow some players more freedom to express their actual qualities, they look very restricted in their movements and actions and sticking to his instructions like when a fly lands on shit. The problem is, fly feels there at home while our players becoming uncomfortable, nervy, and are devoid of any confidence due to that. When they become a bees on the flower we'll see some honey being produced. di Maria, Falcao, Mata, Rooney, Januzaj, Valencia, Rafael, Herrera (add more here) are all players who are used to have much more freedom in their play in previous seasons, playing for different managers and now they need to learn and show something completely new and quickly. It's a process and taking into account that we all (more or less) trust this manager to take us on to next level, some patience needs to be accepted across the fan base.

Herrera: Michael Carrick is a midfield role model
Ander Herrera has declared his respect for Michael Carrick and has revealed how his fellow Manchester United midfielder helps to inspire the squad's younger players.
In an exclusive interview with MUTV, Herrera describes the Reds' vice-captain as "one of the best players I've ever played with" and cites his composure as being a key component to his important influence on the team, on and off the pitch.
"He always gives us calmness; he's a very calm guy when he's playing. He gives me confidence," says Herrera.
"He is very good for the young players because he always tries to help, not necessarily with words but with his attitude and his calmness.
"He is one of the best players I've ever played with and a very good professional," adds the Spaniard. "We can all improve by looking at him and what he does. I feel lucky to play with him."

Makes you wonder if this : LINK isn't playing on his mind and the reason why LvG doesn't see a 100% in training and others get the nod.

I don't get this, Okay He says that he cannot compare him with people like Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata. But He played Januzaj and Fellaini instead of Herrera.
And also I don't think Mata is done enough this season, He is inconsistent. Mata can be dropped in favor of Herrera.
