Aye. Regardless what you opinions of Putin are, there's no way he's going to take I.S as lightly as the rest have been doing so far. I expect them to be extinguished in due course.

The sad fact is that even if (when) IS are wiped out there will be another group who show up, then another, then another. I cannot see an end to this, unfortunately. We are in the worst catch 22. If we ('the west') do nothing IS will grow stronger and stronger, and they will continue to murder innocents in Europe and in the middle east. If we go to war with them we'll probably win, but we'll definitely destroy innocent lives in the process, giving birth to the next generation of people who have an axe to grind with the west. This wont end in any of our lifetimes.

Yeah, this is not new but I cant help but think ISIS is different from previous terrorist groups. They have control of a whole fucking state. You know the Iran and Syria leaders are bad, but they aren't completely crazy. ISIS has no compassion for fellow Muslims, let alone Westerners.
I tend to think we should be cautious when it comes to other Middle Eastern conflicts but I would have no complaints about a war with ISIS as long as we set out to do just that and not get tangled up elsewhere with different people.

Like you guys said, you could see something like that coming, we all knew from the start that with the refugee wave there will be illegal immigrants and terrorists marching into countries, unfortunately France didn't catch these in time. You see a number 130 and it's just that until you read some articles putting faces to these people and I'm seething with anger at the inadequacy of the EU - what exactly are we waiting for? Why are the US and Russia fighting this threat and the EU are mostly sitting on their thumbs? I don't think ISIS is that much different than previous terrorist groups, statistically speaking they kill less people than the taliban but their intentions of spreading their caliphate across not only the Middle East but over Europe as well, makes them a global threat.

I wouldn't exactly say that the US are doing a lot in Syria. The odd drone strike, sending troops to train rebel fighters is about the extent of it because they still don't know if they should be fighting IS or the countries president Assad. The ironic thing in all of this is that's how it originally started. America in the 80s paid a shit load of money and delivered a shit load of arms to the little known Taliban to fight against the Russians in Afghanistan. Its a documented fact. The little known Taliban then became the very well known splinter group Al-Queda. And we all know what happened next. The EU isn't getting involved because that bitch Merkel is trying to show the world how much Germany has changed after the second world war but in doing so is putting the lot of us in the firing line because of her egoistic motives. What scares the shit out of me is what happens next? Russia has the balls to take on IS on their home turf but they're also attacking rebel forces put in place by America, Turkey and Saudia Arabia and are supporters of president Assad. The same as Iran who for me are one of the most dangerous countrys in the world with a crack head leader. America, so therefore the EU want Assad taken out so how does it end? Could WW111 be starting before our eyes? Just in case it is I might as well just sell everything I've got and become a crack head myself and watch it all pass me by in a purple haze. Anyone want to buy a Nissan Juke?

Russia have softened their stance on Assad recently though. Reports suggest they'd be open to replacing him. That is the key in all this, if the U.S and Russia can come to some agreement on what happens with Assad it will make the situation more clear and easier to cripple ISIS eventually leading to getting rid of them.
Of course, crippling ISIS doesn't stop the threat of terror. I agree with Monty above that stopping Islamic extremism completely will not happen, at least not in our life time. But you're concern will be more with lone wolf attacks (and Al Qaeda) than a series orchestrated attacks like the one in Paris at the weekend.
I was only thinking earlier, looking at the news with Obama and Putin in discussions and shaking hands...it didn't take long for everyone to forget about the Ukraine did it?

I don't think Iran is that dangerous simply because their president isn't suicidal. They value their lives and they know that the US and Israel would obliterate them. Russia backs Iran and Putin isn't crazy. The guy has balls, but he knows where he can poke around and where he can't. He wouldn't back Iran if they did something crazy. For that reason, I don't really buy the WWIII hype.
As for Assad, I guess it depends more so on Russia. The public here in the US is skeptical about these so called "moderate rebels" we're training because history has shown that it all comes back to bite us in the end. If Russia is fine with breaking up ties with Assad, he hasn't got much time left I imagine. Just goes to show how much of this rests on external powers.
I still think ISIS is more dangerous than other terror groups. They are the only group who has focused on making territorial gains. They also have also made economic gains simply by looting and selling on the black market. This combined with their absolute craziness makes for a dangerous enemy.

Yeah I don't buy the WW3 hype either. The superpowers are all too wary of each other to piss each other off TOO much and the ones who could cause one don't have the firepower. ISIS are dangerous but I think if the US and Russia can sing from a relatively similar hymn sheet they'll get obliterated.

I really hope that Russia and America can reach a solution on this because it will definately save a lot of innocent lives but for me there's no way Putin will agree to anything unless it suits his agenda. He should of been brought up on war crimes a long time ago but still he survives. He has no morals and destroys anything put in his way. He hasn't forgot his KGB past and leads a life of a gangster. Basically he's untouchable and he knows it. He definately has something up his sleeve but the big question is what is it?

Apologies. I guess I should have done more research before spouting off because I didn't realise that Iran has agreed to roll back its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of sanctions. A little knowledge goes a long way but no knowledge makes you look like a twat

I reckon that Putin is hedging his bets here and will do whatever suits Russia and Russia only which is what he is supposed to be doing I suppose, but I think he is hanging back to get everyone else fighting one another and hopes to be the only superpower left with anything to believed.

Seems like France are already retaliating with a bunch of bombs dropped last night on Raqqa and most of the people responsible for the attacks being arrested. I really hope the deaths of these people will not be in vain and this will be the wake up call for sides to reach a solution, then we can go back to hating each other.
On a slightly different note, the France 24 channel that youtube are broadcasting live has been great to get insights and the latest on this matter.
