Rooney will undoubtedly finish his career as both England's all time leading scorer as well as having the most caps, he'll also finish his career as United's all time greatest goalscorer. Ask 100 United and England fans their top 3 favourite players ever and I reckon he'd barely get a mention..... Incredible really.

He's a weird case. He's probably even got an outside shot at taking Shearer's Premier League record as well.
I think at United he's tainted by the fact that when he was at his best, he was overshadowed by Ronaldo, and then the whole mess with the transfer request(s). And England fans just think of him as what might have been, Euro 2004 remains his best tournament in an England shirt despite only being 18 at the time. He could and probably should have been better than he has been for both United and England.

Which in itself is remarkable considering how well he's done, looking at his titles and his goals record.
But I agree, he could've been even better looking at his early promise and even going back just a few years to the 09/10 season in particular, he was awesome and was rightly being spoken about in the same breath as the people just below Messi and Ronaldo (or on a par in some cases) but now he's not even close to that level, at a time when he should be playing the best football of his career he's actually regressed in my opinion.
I suppose he's still young enough, only 29 and has a good few years left in him. There's definitely enough time for him to at least get the United fans thinking higher of him.

well he does a lot of stupid things, his fitness for a while was pretty poor (not sure if he stopped smoking or not) and he lost a bit of pace. something that seems to be back now.
and despite all that he was easily the best player england has had for a while now

Rooney just been nominated in the forwards for the FIFPro team of the year, reminded me of this conversation. Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney are the only two forwards who have been mentioned on all ten shortlists since the introduction of the World XI in 2005. They join goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and midfielder Andrea Pirlo as the only players with ten nominations. You don't see too many people doubt the class of the other three people on that list.

Not long ago I wrote a post on the old forum about how England had a lot of good young players but with the exception of strikers. Now we have Kane - who is probably the most hyped young player since Rooney - and players like Austin, Ings, and Berahino, who have all had good to great seasons but didn't even get picked for the squad, and James Wilson looks like the real deal, too. I know one or two good seasons doesn't guarantee success with the national team. We have had many strikers who looked like potential England regulars only to never really do it at international level, Kevin Phillips being a good example, but the future is definitely looking a lot brighter. Funny how things can change in less than a year. Now all we have to do is unearth a young defensive midfielder or two and we'd be golden.
