MANCHESTER UNITED SIGN ERIC BAILLY
Manchester United is delighted to announce that Eric Bertrand Bailly has completed his transfer from Villarreal CF, subject to successfully obtaining a work permit. Eric joins on a four-year contract with the option to extend for a further two years. Bailly, 22, made 47 appearances for Villarreal since joining on 29 January 2015. The Ivory Coast central defender has made 15 appearances for his country and was part of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, having appeared in all six matches during the competition.
Bailly said: "It is a dream come true to be joining Manchester United. To play football at the highest level is all I have ever wanted to do.
"I want to progress to be the best that I can be and I believe working with Jose Mourinho will help me develop in the right way and at the right club. I am looking forward to meeting my new team-mates and to starting this new chapter of my life."
Mourinho said: "Eric is a young central defender with great natural talent. He has progressed well to date and has the potential to become one of the best around.
"We look forward to working with him to help nurture that raw talent and fulfil his potential. Eric is at the right club to continue his development."

Never seen anything of him really, so don't know what calibre player we've got other than reading your opinions and what the journo' say.
The one part that niggles at me is that small detail about the African Cup.

It's probably for the best that he's not an established player - these tend to come with a lot of expectations. I wonder what that would mean for our younger defenders, including Phil Jones.
Good statement from Mourinho as well that bashes the "he doesn't invest in youth" myths

Good statement from Mourinho as well that bashes the "he doesn't invest in youth" myths The problem is he goes elsewhere bringing in established youth rather than promoting from within. In this case again it will be interesting to see what happens to Fosu Mensah, Tuanzebe etc. as we certainly aren't lacking in talented centre backs.

I think that might be it for Paddy though, surely we'll keep Fosu-Mensah as he's one of the most promising talents we have

TFM is a future top class midfielder for me, not a defender. We needed a central defender, experienced would've been preferable but there's a serious lack of quality about so a young guy was on the cards. He was highly sought after as well.
It makes our future look seriously bright again though. So many potentially top class players in various positions. Shaw at left back, this guy at centre back, TFM in midfield and Martial/Rashford/Memphis/Lingard/Januzaj (obviously all might not stay and in Adnan's case probably won't) in attack.

Paddy was playing in midfield for the reserves towards the end of the season and has been for Northern Ireland as well, be interesting to see how he gets on at the Euro's as he's done well so far in there from what've heard and seen. I think that's probably where his future is but will it be with us yeah looks unlikely, like the others I hope he gets a real look over in pre season.

Aye, I just hope this lad will play at centre back, I've seen suggestions of him being a right back and he's as much a right back as Timbo is. If Jose's intention is to convert him we could have saved €30m and developed one of our own.
Central defence and midfield are probably the two hardest positions to bring youngsters into and give them game time, with the investment we expect in there as well it's only going to get tougher to breakthrough. Just speculating, we'll have to wait and see.

I learnt my lesson last season in terms of questioning the signings of inexperienced and relatively unknown players. Not making the same mistake twice.

He's quick, strong and good in the air but can't play football, has serious concentration lapses and has his fair share of injuries. At £10m he'd probably be worth a punt but £30m, nah. Went onto Villareal and Españols forum. The Villareal fans are rubbing their hands with glee and the Españoles are crying their heads off for the amount he was sold for

Quick, strong and good in the air will do for me as a starting point. Bored of hearing about the footballing qualities of defenders. First and foremost they should have the attributes to defend and defend well, which he has. Lapses in concentration is normal for any young defender and he's got a manager as good as any at ironing out those defensive deficiencies.
I'd much rather pay £30mil for him than throw £50mil at Everton for Stones.

I think they would have gone for Stones at 50m, he either doesn't fancy the move yet what with the new money there, or they've been quoted 80m or something equally ridiculous. Probably a bit of both gone on.

Well I'm glad either way. He'd have been as much of a punt as this guy is and would've cost considerably more.
